NUMBER 1
Massive delays were caused in 2013 by human skull fragments found in luggage in Ft Lauderdale. The unsuspecting travellers got more than they bargained for when they bought the clay pots. Not deemed a security threat, the offending souvenirs were in fact evidence for a crime.
NUMBER 2
Lighters and hairspray aren't a good mix when they're in a bag to be checked onto a flight. Even less so when the lighter sparks and it all goes up in three foot flames, as happened in Atlantic City. Pack smart people.
NUMBER 3
You'd think it would be unusual, taking an undercover body on a plane. Apparently, not so much. Wheelchairs seem to come in handy when you're maneuvering human remains. One family attempted to bypass the charge for flying a body by pushing it through security and a mum and daughter thought sunglasses might aid the deception when they had a go at getting a 91 year-old dead man on the plane.
NUMBER 4
So you're diving by a wreck and find a cannonball, of course you want to take it home with you. On a plane though?! Something which could blow up at any time, no matter how old it is? 290 people had a bit of a wait in 2012 while Ft Lauderdale International Airport sorted out the misunderstanding.
NUMBER 5
We're not entirely convinced about this fish enthusiast's souvenir transportation. Surprisingly, fish can be flown but only by prior arrangement. Filling your suitcases with water and 240 fish is not the way to do it.
NUMBER 6
We all want airport security to find and keep deadly weapons. But boomerangs? This is an example of cultural differences - Australian airlines are happy for you to buy a boomerang whilst on holiday, but if you're flying into America, your souvenir can't be in your hand luggage.
NUMBER 7
It's all about how you pack, clearly. When poisonous snakes - dead ones - were discovered in luggage at Newark airport, the problem wasn't the snakes. Dead snakes, even deadly ones, are allowed on planes. If they're preserved in liquid, not so much.
NUMBER 8
Taking 18 heads on a plane with you? Fine, just make sure they're all above board. There will be an issue if they get lost though, which is what happened at Chicago O'Hare International Airport in 2013. The skulls were medical specimens by the way, you wont get the documentation to fly just any old heads.
NUMBER 9
No visa for your baby? Well, don't try this stunt, pulled by parents in the United Arab Emirates. Rather than going down the official route, they packed their small child into a bag, then put him through the airport scanner. Of course he was noticed.
NUMBER 10
It's not always common sense, what you're allowed to take on an airplane. You can easily look any queries up online though. Pretty sure a samurai sword isn't on the 'yes' list though. Next time the person who attempted to get it through security at Logan International Airport, Boston, should check first.
