I recently broke my back in a nasty dirt bike crash. We'd been out doing hill climbs and practicing technique but I was riding on a recent foot injury and was trying hard to avoid landing too hard when I dismounted.
On my last attempt, I stepped down from the bike but didn't realize that instead of planting on the hillside, the Beta had flopped downhill and was coming for me. As I slipped downhill trying to regain my footing, the bike landed on my head, crushing me and breaking my spine.
My riding buddies stabilized me and got me off the trail and into a truck, then down to the ER for treatment. Fortunately, it turned out that the break wasn't nearly as severe as it could have been and I've made a complete recovery.
The accident taught me two things:
1. Always wear your gear, my spine protector saved me form taking a foot-peg through my ribs.
2. Never ride alone, I would have been in big trouble if my friends weren't there to carry me to the hospital.
