LARRY SCOTT | First Mr. Olympia’s Bicep Legacy | Golden Era Bodybuilding
Larry Scott, the inaugural Mr. Olympia of 1965 & 1966, remains a towering figure in bodybuilding’s Golden Era.
Renowned for his sculpted biceps & balanced physique, Scott redefined the sport with his relentless work ethic & innovative training, leaving an enduring legacy through his iconic Scott Curls & trailblazing spirit.
From a modest start to a global legend, Larry Scott’s journey embodies grit, triumph & transformation.
Born on October 12, 1938, in Blackfoot, Idaho, Larry was the eldest of four in a devout Mormon family. His father, Wayne, a machinist & mother, Bea, a homemaker, raised him in modest circumstances.
At 5’7” & a mere 120 pounds, young Larry was unremarkable, until age 16, when a bodybuilding magazine, salvaged from a dump, sparked his ambition.
Dragging a broken axle home to serve as his first barbell, he began training in a frigid Pocatello shed, fueled by determination.
By 1956, the scrawny teen had packed on 30 pounds, reaching 150.
After high school, he traded academics for iron & moved to Los Angeles in 1959, the epicenter of bodybuilding. Working odd jobs, pumping gas, hammering nails, Scott lived at Gold’s Gym, catching the eye of mentor Bill Pearl.
His rise was meteoric: Mr. Idaho in 1960, Mr. California in 1962 & Mr. America in 1964.
At 200 pounds, with 20 inch biceps & a 52 inch chest, his physique, broad shoulders, tiny waist & powerful legs, was a masterpiece. His once, thin arms, now legendary, earned the moniker The Scott Arms.
In 1965, Joe Weider launched the Mr. Olympia in New York & Scott, at 26, seized the crown against formidable competition like Harold Poole, his symmetry & artistry prevailing.
He defended his title in 1966 in Brooklyn, besting Earl Maynard to chants of Larry!
At 27, he retired at his peak, overwhelmed by fame’s relentless demands.
Settling in Salt Lake City, Scott married Rachel Ichikawa in 1962, raising five children: Susan, Derek, Nathan, Michael & Adam.
After their 1979 divorce, he wed Shirley Hansen in 1980, blending families.
He launched Larry Scott Nutrition, popularizing protein powders & his signature Scott Curl benches, while advocating for clean training amid the steroid era.
In 1985, he opened Scott’s Training Center, a no, nonsense gym reflecting his ethos.
His 1992 induction into the IFBB Hall of Fame cemented his legend.
Scott’s charisma shone in cameos like Muscle Beach Party (1964) & The Rockford Files (1976).
He remained a fan favorite at expos, his arms still awe, inspiring.
Tragedy struck in 1999 when his son Derek died in a motorcycle accident at 22, yet Scott’s faith sustained him.
Into his 60s, he lifted at 170 pounds, still chiseled.
Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2002, Scott faced the disease with resilience, maintaining his physique even as his memory faded.
In 2011, he shared his diagnosis, earning an outpouring of support.
On March 8, 2014, he passed away at 75 in Salt Lake City, survived by Shirley & four children.
Larry Scott’s legacy endures: two Mr. Olympia titles, a Mr. America crown & a physique that set the standard. From a junkyard axle to bodybuilding’s pinnacle, he didn’t just build muscle, he shaped an era.
The Legend & Golden Boy remains immortal.
