Jannat al-Baqi (The Garden of Baqi)
Jannat al-Baqi is the historic cemetery in Madinah, directly adjacent to Masjid an-Nabawi. It is one of the holiest burial grounds in Islam, where many of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ family members, close companions (Sahabah), and prominent figures of early Islam are buried. Among those resting here are Sayyidah Fatimah (RA), Uthman ibn Affan (RA), the third Caliph, and many of the Prophet’s wives and children.
Visiting Jannat al-Baqi reminds pilgrims of the fleeting nature of life and the eternal reward of the Hereafter. Pilgrims often make du’a from outside its walls, as entry is generally restricted.
Location: East of Masjid an-Nabawi, accessible just beyond the eastern gates of the Prophet’s Mosque.
Jannat al-Baqi (the Baqi cemetery) in Madinah is not open all day — it has specific visiting times:
Opening: It usually opens after Fajr prayer until shortly after sunrise.
Afternoon: It opens again after Asr prayer until Maghrib.
Outside of these times, the gates remain closed, though pilgrims may still stand nearby and make du‘a from outside.
Entry is generally limited — men are allowed to enter the cemetery itself, while women usually make du‘a from outside the gates.
Since times may vary slightly with the season and prayer schedules, the best approach is to head to Baqi immediately after Fajr or Asr while the gates are open.
