On January 31, 1915, German forces launched the first large-scale gas attack in history at Osowiec Fortress. They positioned 3,000 chlorine gas cylinders along a 6-kilometer front, connecting them to pipes that released the gas. When the wind direction was favorable, the Germans opened the valves, releasing approximately 180 tons of chlorine gas. The gas formed a yellow-green cloud that drifted towards the Polish positions.

The gas cloud caused widespread panic and devastation among Polish troops. However, they showed remarkable resilience. Lacking gas masks, they improvised using wet cloths, handkerchiefs, or cotton pads soaked in water or urine to cover their faces. Despite heavy casualties, the Poles held their ground, and the German attack ultimately failed. This courageous defense marked a turning point in the battle, inspiring Poland's fight for independence. The Osowiec Fortress gas attack led to international condemnation and spurred development of gas masks and countermeasures.
