I Am Not My Career

At the age of 5, adults begin asking us what we want to BE when we grow up. This is likely the first moment in our lives where we get subtly introduced to the concept that we don’t have an identity until we have a career and that growth is finite (e.g. we become something and that's it).

After we get our first job or maybe after a couple years we begin realizing just how bad corporate drudgery actually feels but our identity attachment to what we do, consumerism, debt, and mild comfort from our bi-weekly income drip make us feel we can’t escape.

The reality is that we CAN escape the drudgery if we decouple our sense of identity from what we do by simply realizing our JOB ISN'T WHO WE ARE its just a thing we do. This mindset shift opens the door to experimentation with other possibilities and it's something I attribute to my own exponential growth over the past few years.
