Tenshodo Blueberry Farm

Here, we are at Mr. and Mrs. Sakamoto’s farm.
Again, thank you for guiding me.
Today, it is the 15th of August.
The harvesting time will be end soon.
So, blueberries are fewer than the best season in this farm.
But they are late varieties on this side, aren’t they?
Generally, the latest variety
is ripening from now on.
However, due to the global warming,
they have ripened already and the harvesting time will be end soon.
With climate changes,
Temperature changes extremely.
It is much hotter this year, isn’t it?
The global warming has gotten worse and worse every year.
Farmers have really struggled with it.
Do you make any effort
Or attempt?
You do not compromise the way of growing blueberries. How do you grow the blueberries?
The land is very good to grow blueberries.
It used to be a paddy field and the soil is dry, not clay.
Blueberries are not grown well with the clay soil.
Because of that, we have better environment to grow blueberries.
This land is located
between mountains and a river.
Also, we catch the afternoon sun for long time on this land
So that the sugar content gets higher.
What we don’t compromise is that
We grow blueberries organically. We never use any pesticides and chemical fertilizers at our farm.
Therefore, so many pests come to eat the leaves and fruits.
We kill all pests by hand.
These are the moth larvae, as you told me, aren’t they?
They are so many
Loads of them swarm on the bushes
They look alike with the branch.
They are not active in summer
They become very active in spring.
To remove them is really hard work.
We just say ‘organic’
But you remove all pests by hands, don’t you?
It is easy to say ‘Organic farming’,
Thanks to
Your patient and steady effort
We can eat safe food.
Unless you visit the farm,
You hardly
Realize how hard it is, even though you know it in your mind.
We never use any pesticides and chemical fertilizers
So, you can eat our blueberries here directly.
Freshly picked up blueberries are
The most delicious.
Please pick up the one as big as possible.
It is so sweet and rich.
This is very rich
Some different varieties have
Juicier taste
The stem is still red, you see.
When it comes dark
The fruit gets sweeter.
We look the stems
You look them carefully
And pick them up the sweetest ones
Do bees carry pollen?
Japanese honeybees’ beekeeping business
Is very active here.
The bees come and pollinate the bushes here every year
But they don’t come here at all this year.
Is it because of the terrible summer heat?
Well, in the beginning of March
We could see some bees
And we thought our blueberries were fine.
It got cold after blooming
Then, bees disappeared.
I asked beekeepers nearby
And they said all bees were dead
Japanese honeybees are a bit weak, aren’t they?
We harvested blueberries less than one third this year, compared to last year
We have only few stocks for now.
Japanese honeybees are rare now
Hopefully, they don’t become extinct
And will come back to our farm again
To be able for bees to pollinate the bushes
We will cooperate with beekeepers
And take measures
Some years ago
We used to offer farm activities and cake baking classes for family
We have stopped doing them due to COVID-19
I wish we will start them again next year
We will bring bees by cooperate with beekeepers next year
And harvest blueberries as much as possible
So, we can offer the activity
And children can enjoy it
Not only children but also parents
Do not experience the farm activities
Parents enjoy the activities more than children
These kinds of experiences are very important
Little by little
We will offer such activities for people by cooperating with farmers
Now, using the blueberries
We produce Jams
Juice
Although we haven’t sold, yet
We ask a winery to make blueberry wine
Are you planning to sell it next year?
We have succeeded in producing
Authentic wine, I believe
