This is the return trip from our 7 hour long❄️climb on the San Bernardino Pass in Switzerland, on Christmas Day🎄2024. The San Bernardino Pass (2066 m or 6778 ft) is an alpine pass, connecting the Italian-speaking region of Ticino with the German-speaking Graubünden (or the other way around). The pass road is usually open from late May to early November, depending on snow conditions, and, because it was closed to traffic now, we choose to go there and brace the snows.
We started the climb at 10 o'clock in the morning from the Rest Area San Bernardino Nord, where we left our car, reached the top of the Pass 3 hours later, and returned under the cover of darkness to the place from which we started.
The weather was perfect. Cold in the morning (-12°C or 10,4°F), lots of sunshine on the way up on the exposed side of the mountain, very cold on top of the pass (-20°C or -4°F), and a bit milder when we got back to the car (-8°C or 17,6°F).
The views on the mountain were breathtaking. Everything was covered in pure white snow ❄️, the wind was reshaping the landscape, and the tallest peaks, lit up by the setting sun, seemed like massive candles sending their light in the valleys below.
In 7 hours we covered 16.46 km (10.22 miles), climbed from 1600 m to 2125 m (5249 ft - 6972 ft), gained 553 m of elevation (1814 feet) and enjoyed every moment of it.
