Gilmore, Idaho is a remote historic mining ghost town in Lemhi County, high in the rugged landscapes of eastern Idaho. The settlement began in the late 1800s and early 1900s as prospectors and miners flocked to the area after lead and silver were discovered nearby. Early cabins went up around 1902, and the town grew slowly at first because it was so isolated.
The community boomed in the 1910s and 1920s once mining activity picked up and the Gilmore & Pittsburgh Railroad was built. This line connected Gilmore to Montana and made it possible to ship ore more efficiently. At its peak, the town supported hundreds of residents, with businesses, homes, a school, a hotel, and even multiple saloons.
However, Gilmore’s success didn’t last. A power plant explosion in the late 1920s, combined with falling metal prices and the Great Depression, led to mines shutting down and people moving away. By the early 1930s, Gilmore was already fading, and the railroad quit running by the end of the decade. The post office stayed open until the 1950s, but over time most of the town was abandoned.
Today, Gilmore is a ghost town you can explore. Dozens of old buildings and cabins still stand or have been stabilized, and interpretive signs tell parts of their story.
