Exploring the abandoned Raben Steinfeld Castle

History:
The village of Raben Steinfeld was first mentioned on January 11, 1410. The von Raben and Feldflur families were associated with it.
Around 1160, a German castle already existed here. In 1648, the estate became the property of the duchy.

The current castle was built between 1886-1887. The Neo-Renaissance brick building was erected according to the plans of architect Hermann Willebrand.

Initially, the palace served as the summer residence for the Schwerin court and later became the residence of the widow of Grand Duke Maria von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.

The last grand duke of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin dynasty, Frederick Francis IV, left the castle to his aunt Elizabeth, who, through marriage, became the last grand duchess of Oldenburg.

During World War II, the house served as a military hospital from 1941 to 1945, when Soviet forces occupied the castle.

In 1947, a forestry school moved to the castle, educating foresters until 1995.

Subsequently, the building remained vacant and was auctioned, along with parts of the landscape park, around 2013 by the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The winning bidder, a Swiss real estate company, left the building vacant due to significant renovation arrears.

In 2019, the municipality managed to repurchase the castle, which was owned by a Swiss bank, for 680,000 euros.

In the future, the municipality plans to renovate it for cultural purposes.

The castle is beautifully situated in an extensive English landscape park that stretches to Lake Schwerin. The park, established in 1851 according to the plans of court gardener Theodor Klett, still features dendrological elements today.
