Just days after visiting Beijing and agreeing to increase the limit of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports to Canada in exchange for lower tariffs on Canadian agricultural products, Prime Minister Mark Carney is defending his decision.
Speaking in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, the Liberal leader re-emphasized that a maximum of 49,000 Chinese-made EVs will be allowed into the country per year, which he noted was less than three per cent of vehicles that enter Canada annually.
Asked if he had any assurances for concerned Ontario auto workers, Carney called the trade agreement a “trial” and an “opportunity” that will be executed a “controlled way.”
“This is the way you bring somebody into the market,” Carney said. “We don’t want to be competitive in the market of 2000, 2010, we want to be competitive in the market of the future. That’s what’s going to get great jobs for Ontarians going forward,” he said.
