A September 2025 report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warns infection rates from drug-resistant “nightmare bacteria” rose almost 70% between 2019 and 2023. Researchers like Scott Medina, associate professor of biomedical engineering, are trying to come up with new ways to fight these bacteria that can’t seem to be killed with the norma antibiotics. He explains how they’re doing that, how bacteria evolved to resist our drugs and what the average person can do about it.
