After colostrum, breast milk transitions into a new stage called transitional milk. This phase usually lasts about two weeks after birth. Transitional milk contains higher levels of fat, lactose, and water-soluble vitamins compared to colostrum, making it richer in calories and energy to support the baby’s rapid growth.
Mature milk is the final stage of breast milk production. It is made up of approximately 90% water, which keeps the baby well hydrated, and 10% essential nutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, and fats needed for healthy growth and development.
There are two important types of mature milk during each feeding session:
Foremilk – This is the milk released at the beginning of a feeding. It is thinner and contains more water, vitamins, and protein to help quench the baby’s thirst.
Hindmilk – This milk comes later in the feeding. It is richer in fat and provides the calories needed for healthy weight gain and proper brain development.
Understanding the difference between transitional milk and mature milk helps parents ensure babies receive full nutrition during breastfeeding.
