Critical Minerals and Strategic Materials are crucial for Australia’s economy, geopolitical stability and the net zero transition. Australia and seven partner nations combined identify 65 elements in these categories. They are increasingly the focus of trade restrictions, diplomatic tensions and land-use negotiations. Allison and Karol will provide an introductory review of critical mineral and strategic material resources in Australia, synthesising and expanding on their recent Australian Journal of Earth Science paper on the topic. They will cover what they are, why they are needed, Australia’s comparative endowment, government support, and the role of Geoscience Australia’s precompetitive geoscience within this context.
