The backtrail of Saltoun Big Wood in early September boasts one of the most impressive displays of butterflies in the Lothians. Attracted by the flowering of the devil's bit scabious along the trail edges dozens of Red Admirals, Commas, Small Whites, Small Tortoiseshells, Peacocks, Green-veined Whites and Painted Ladies take part in this final flourish of the butterfly season. This year the red admirals have been the most numerous species with approaching 100 individuals at times along the half mile stretch.
