Grassland restoration is a journey that requires patience, persistence, and the right tools. In this episode of *Our Amazing Grasslands*, Pete Bauman (South Dakota State University Extension) takes us through the second phase of restoring both degraded native pastures and former crop fields in eastern South Dakota.
From overgrazed sites dominated by Kentucky bluegrass and smooth brome to fields once planted in soybeans, Bauman shows how prescribed fire, rest, targeted grazing, and native seeding can revive plant communities. Viewers will see how native species like big bluestem, Indian grass, side-oats grama, echinacea, prairie clovers, blazing stars, and milkweed return over time—bringing back biodiversity, improving forage for livestock, and enhancing wildlife habitat.
Restoring grasslands is not a one-time effort but an ongoing process of listening to the land, adjusting management, and striking a balance between grazing and conservation. This video highlights the challenges, lessons, and successes of bringing South Dakota’s prairies back to life.
