On 1/19/2023, I’ve been considering the next steps in the restoration of my Astor barrel organ. I had several unanswered questions though at that time.
1 How were the Astor pallet hinges originally constructed? Without knowing, it’s hard to move forward. Were they leather straps like the present design and simply glued in place? I suspect they were leather facings mounted on the underside of the pallet (like what I saw in my reed organ).
2 What was used for the pallet guides? Do I use brass pins instead of the nails? I have hundreds of old Victrola phonograph needles that could make great pallet guides (don't worry, I have an overabundance of these and can repurpose some).
3 Was the entire top of the pallet chest lined with leather as it now? Is it a better seal for the pallet to seat leather against leather versus leather against wood?
4 What’s up with the sloppy cut out wind slots? Was there a reason why someone reduced the openings to the soundboard? Or did it just give a better chance of proper sealing if there were problems with the springs and the alignment of the pallets?
I must resolve these questions, I plan to post inquiries on some of the mechanical music, barrel organ forums. However to date I haven’t found anything on early parlor or chamber organs.
