In a year-end interview with Global News Anchor Dawna Friesen, Prime Minister Mark Carney faced a question about whether he looked like a hypocrite for backing potential pipeline expansion after warning about the dangers of climate change.
"Not at all," Carney said, adding the world will continue using hydrocarbons for decades. "It's in the variance of 25 to 30 million barrels per day of oil, down from 100, but still being used."
He said "low carbon" was "crucial". If Canada were to supply "harder carbons"— such as industrial fossil fuels— the supply needed to be low-carbon.
Carney added that Alberta's Memorandum of Understanding focuses on pathways to remove 16 megatons of carbon, equivalent to taking 90 per cent of the cars and trucks in Alberta off the road, to produce low-carbon barrels, which is not a retreat from climate goals.
