Gearbest.com sent me a surprise a few days ago. While I've been on the hunt for fun, small-scale trail rigs, there are some models that didn't make it onto my radar. As luck would have it, I was sent a review unit of a very cool, very scale trail truck. Meet the WPL C14 "Hercules" 1/16-scale R/C crawler.
While I was quick to call this rig a mix of hobby-grade and toy-grade, it's more the latter than the former. At $33.99 (Gearbest.com), this truck features a "hardbody" cab which looks like a Toyota Hilux. The back of the truck is inspired by rough and tumble trail rigs, however, there is a version (the C24) which features a traditional pickup truck bed.
There's quite a bit of plastic on this model, which is fine, however, there are metal chassis rails in use too, so you have some solid, durable foundation on which the truck rides.
While the motor is peppy, the biggest letdown, in my eyes, is the steering motor. In the video, I referred to this as a servo, however, it's not. I've got plans for this little truck, most of which involve it being torn down to the frame and applying new, hobby-grade electronics.
