We explore how to make iron oxide or rust in a reliable way from iron nails to get a quantity that can be used as a pigment, catalyst, and abrasive to name a few applications. This is an example of chemistry that can be done easily at home.
If you want to follow along with this experiment, you will need:
an iron nail,
some iron wire,
salt,
water,
filter paper/kitchen roll/coffee filter,
some glasses/plastic cups to collect solutions and filter into.
You will also need to build an electrolytic cell which we covered previously in a video on electrolysis but instead we use iron for the electrodes ( • Exploring Electrolysis (Part 1) - Building... .
In this video I make use of the method shown by NurdRage which I have linked below: • Make Iron Oxide (for Thermite)
He has many excellent videos exploring chemistry, well worth watching!
Thank you so much for watching and look forward to seeing you next time.
