This video introduces the traditional Chinese Characters “Biao,” “Bie,”and “Bin” as written in the Pinyin system of romanization. I first spend a few minutes talking about the number of traditional Chinese character users in the world. Then, I get into describing the following eight characters (with a few notes on the simplified forms):
2:25 biao
表 “biao(3)” means a “surface.” “Biao(3)da(2)” carries the meaning of “to express thoughts or feelings.”
錶⌚️”biao (3)” is used for “wristwatch.”
標 “biao(1)” means “sign” or “mark.” “Biao(1) qian(1)” is “label or tag.”
5:20 bie
別 “bie(2)” is used to show “other” but also often takes the meaning of “don’t.” “Bie(2) shu(4)” is a “villa.”
6:39 bin
賓 “bin (1)” means “guest.” It is also used in transliteration of the name for my home state of Pennsylvania.
檳 “bin (1)” is the betel tree and used in the tranliteration of “champagne.”
濱 “bin(1)” shows “closeness to,” (often bodies of water).
瀕 “bin (1)” also means closeness but in a more abstract sense of “on the verge” od something happening.
