THIS VIDEO IS FOR WINGCHUN PRACTITIONERS who understand wingchun's basic strategy and tools and wish to use them for sparring or MMA.
The techniques shown in the above video have been 'proven' through UFC and MMA type bouts, and represent the following insights:
Jon Jones' outstretched arm confounds his opponents and gives him an advantage by allowing him to dominate the upper body striking space (called 'arms forward' in western boxing, or 'long guard' in muay thai).
Rory MacDonald's use of constant pressure and bongsau (Irish bare knuckle 'gate defense') block to protect himself from jabs and hooks, and even kicks, works to good effect.
Tony Ferguson's constant pressure 'fighting in a phonebooth' tactics work to good effect, as well as his training on a wingchun dummy in order to bypass his opponents' arm defenses (akin to muay thai elbow over boxing guard).
Teep style kicks, as found in wingchun, maintain distance when looking for an access gateway, and can also be used to defend against opponents' kicks.
In conclusion, the core of wingchun sparring or MMA standup game is as follows:
1) One arm forward aiming at opponents' head.
2) Apply constant forwards pressure (like a soldier marching forwards with a spear or knife held out), but always be ready to spring backwards with bongsau(s) for defenses to dissipate and leach opponent's aggressive energy until you can safely move forward and apply pressure again.
3) Use front kicks to control distance and block opponents' kicks as early as possible.
4) Use single straight punches as jabs to chin when accuracy is guaranteed - when you clearly see the gap.
5) Use chain punch 'machine gun' when you see the opportunity, and make sure it blasts through your opponent so that it can send them backwards at least 2 meters - don't use chain punching as a defense or general attempt to dominate the fight.
6) If both fighters use outstretched arm like Jon Jones does, then the real wingchun style fight begins, and arm trapping methods such as those found in loksau drills and chisau really begin to become effective during the fight.
All of these insights are rooted in observable fighting effectiveness from UFC/MMA footage contained in the video above.
