The "Uth Duna," a Leviathan introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds, is a massive reptilian creature with a hefty quadrupedal body, reminiscent of a seal in its streamlined form when in water. Its narrow, arapaima-like face is equipped with powerful jaws lined with small sharp teeth, enabling it to tear through prey with ease. The striped red and lustrous scales covering its body resemble those of an Arapaima, a fitting parallel for its aquatic nature. The Leviathan's most striking features are its translucent, watery fins—formed from a mix of water and mucous secretions—which adorn its head, back, forelimbs, and tail. These fins are supported by long tentacles, also covered in mucous, extending from its head, limbs, and back. When these fins lose their water supply or are damaged, Uth Duna retracts the tentacles, transforming its body into a more seal-like appearance—still heavy, yet graceful and streamlined in water.
Uth Duna reigns as the apex predator of the Scarlet Forest, emerging most often during downpours, when water levels are higher, granting it a decisive advantage in its aquatic habitat. Despite its bulky appearance, Uth Duna is incredibly swift and graceful in water, able to leap from the water and crash down upon its foes with immense force. In battle, it uses its large, toothy jaws for biting and swipes at opponents with its powerful, clawed forelimbs. Its sheer size and power enable it to create massive splashes and waves, knocking hunters off their feet.
In addition to its physical prowess, Uth Duna can utilize the moisture in its surroundings and its body fluids to create a protective veil of water over its body, which forms the watery appendages on its head, back, and tail. This veil offers massive damage reduction, greatly diminishing the effectiveness of hunter attacks. However, as long as this veil remains intact, Uth Duna’s attacks are slower and less aggressive. If the watery fins are broken, the Leviathan’s defense is significantly lowered, making it more vulnerable to attack, while its offense becomes faster and more aggressive due to the loss of weight and the pressure to retaliate.
The tentacles on its fins are believed to have sensory functions, allowing Uth Duna to detect shifts in the water’s movements, such as the presence of intruders. Uth Duna harnesses moisture and mucous, using them as both a defensive and offensive tool in battle. The red and lustrous scales are not just aesthetic; they likely help with camouflage, blending in with the scarlet hues of the Scarlet Forest’s unique flora and water environments.
