Vítězslav Novák: Sonata Eroica for piano, Op. 24 (1900), pianist: Martin Vojtíšek
Novák's Sonata Eroica is a tribute to the heroism of the Slovak insurgents and bandits, including the most famous of them, Juraj Jánošík (see the folk painting at the image), and, in the second movement, an expression of sympathy for the subjugated Slovak people. The composer widely uses the elements of Slovak folk music. In the first movement, we can also hear nearness to the theme from Beethoven's Eroica.
Novák's Eroica is the only great Czech late romantic piano sonata - other Czech composers of Smetana's and later romantic generations did not compose piano sonatas (style of Janáček's Sonata I. X. 1905 is not Romanticism), so Novák's composition fills the gap in the Czech Romanticism.
1. Allegro patetico 0:00
2. Andante mesto - Allegro energico 10:23
