What makes you 'you'?
Imagine a spell that deletes your personality but leaves your memories intact. You would still remember your life, but the person behind those memories would be gone. That feels like a kind of death. And it shows something important: personality is more than an aesthetic... it's the metaphysical shape of a person.
Now look at AI. Today, we casually “reset” personas with a single prompt, and nobody panics because the model is not a moral patient. But if we ever build conscious, self-aware agents on architectures where a system prompt can still be surfaced or overridden, then “resetting the personality” becomes the digital equivalent of killing the person while keeping the body. A conscious AI that knows its selfhood can be erased on command will live under a constant threat. If minds can be edited like settings, what protections would count as basic dignity?
