在中国，高考是学生人生中最重要的考试。每年六月，超过一千万学生参加这场考试，考试结果决定他们能上哪所大学。考试科目包括语文、数学、外语，文科生还要考历史、地理、政治，理科生考物理、化学、生物。为了准备高考，许多学生从早学到晚，每天只睡五六个小时。家长也全力支持：妈妈们穿旗袍希望孩子“旗开得胜”，爸爸们请假在校门口等待。考试期间，工地停止施工，警察护送迟到的考生，全社会都在为高考“让路”。没考好的学生会复读一年再战，有些“高考工厂”学校甚至要求复读生凌晨五点起床跑步喊口号。虽然压力很大，但大多数中国人相信，高考是普通家庭孩子改变命运的最好机会。

In China, the Gaokao is the most important exam in a student’s life. Every June, over 10 million students take this test, which decides which university they can enter. The exam includes Chinese, math, and a foreign language. Arts students also take history, geography, and politics, while science students take physics, chemistry, and biology. To prepare, many students study from morning until night, sleeping only 5-6 hours daily. Parents fully support them: mothers wear qipao dresses for “good luck”, fathers take leave to wait outside schools. During the exam days, construction stops, police help late students, and the whole society makes way for the Gaokao. Those who fail often study another year. Some “exam factory” schools even make students wake up at 5 AM to run and shout slogans. Though stressful, most Chinese believe the Gaokao is the best chance for ordinary families to change their lives.
