The US Navy launched surprise air attacks on the Japanese fleet, sinking four Japanese aircraft carriers and damaging other ships. The Japanese also lost a significant number of their best pilots during the battle. The US lost one carrier and one destroyer. The Battle of Midway was a significant turning point in the war in the Pacific. It marked the first major naval victory for the US against Japan and put an end to Japanese expansion in the Pacific region. It also gave the US a strategic advantage in the Pacific, allowing them to take the initiative in the war against Japan.
