JCMT ALPINE MOUNTAINEERING Skills Course in Chamonix

This video marks the start of my alpine mountaineering journey.

I decided to apply for an alpine mountaineering course where I was hoping to get started on my mountaineering journey by learning as many skills as possible. The course I applied for was organised by the Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust. In the winter of 1979, Jonathan from the north face of the Matterhorn at only 27 years old. The whole ethos of the trust is to equip young climbers with the skills and understanding they need to explore the mountains safely. Over the 3 days, we completed several routes in Chamonix and started to learn/practice a variety of different skills including rope work, glacier travel and crevasse rescue which are all essential. Our guide (Neil Johnson) was very informative and straight to the point which is what I prefer, especially in those sort of environments. The other guides included Yoshiko Miyazaki (Yoshi) and James Thacker who also were very experienced guides and clearly knew their stuff. It was the perfect start to my mountaineering journey. In the future, my aim is to gain some more experience in the Alps in the next few years and then slowly move onto bigger, more challenging expeditions. The ultimate goal is to summit a BIG mountain in the Himalayas.
