MLA Fund Controversy in Meghalaya: Why a Statewide Probe Is Needed Now

The MLA Local Area Development (MLA LAD) Fund is meant to build essential local infrastructure and public assets across Meghalaya. But a fresh political clash has brought this fund back under the spotlight.

VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit has demanded an independent probe into MLA LAD utilisation across all 60 Assembly constituencies, following a remark made by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma in Nongkrem. With accusations and counter-accusations now out in the open, the big question is: Who is accountable for MLA funds?

Each MLA in Meghalaya can recommend schemes worth up to ₹2.5 crore, while an additional ₹10 lakh discretionary grant depends on proper utilisation certificates. However, the latest CAG State Finance Audit Report (2023-24) reveals a worrying picture—733 utilisation certificates amounting to nearly ₹5,000 crore are still pending.

Past cases, including the Lokayukta petition against MLA Marthon Sangma and public comments by Prestone Tynsong, highlight a deeper issue: the misuse of public money and weak financial oversight.
