Drawing Waves - Time Lapse - White Horses

Welcome to another drawing waves with charcoal time lapse video! This drawing is called 'White Horses'. I am using Canson's 140 Lb multimedia paper, which I really like - it has a good weight and smooth soft finish. The paper is 33" x 23" or 84cm x 60cm, and the cropped drawing area is 20" x 30", or 76cm x 51cm.


I took the photo that became this drawing using my trusty GoPro (Hero 5). I put the camera on 'burst' mode, set it to take 30 shots in 2 or 3 seconds, then I position myself in the impact zone of the wave and press the button just as the lip is coming down. I am always impressed at how much punishment my GoPro can take when I'm out in the waves. After a session of shooting I will have two or three thousand images to sift through once I get home, out of which I might get ten good images. The only question then is which image to draw.


The materials I used for this charcoal drawing are: Generals HB & 6B charcoal pencils, General's Primo HB charcoal pencil and General's charcoal powder, various brushes, tortillons, a utility knife, a putty eraser, and a Mono sand eraser. 'White Horses' took about 40 hours to complete, but with the magic of time lapse, reduced down to 20 minutes.
