Learn how to design and build naturally appearing, fully functioning wetlands that require no maintenance and are built to last forever. This presentation will demonstrate how highly successful wetlands can be restored in both dry and wet regions, using organic or mineral soils. Tom Biebighauser will guide you step by step through the efficient design and construction of wetlands using clay soil, groundwater, or aquatic-safe liners. Instruction includes practical survey techniques, contract administration, and methods for building wetlands at low cost that can live on for thousands of years. You will learn how to apply groundwater dams, control erosional head cuts, and restore natural hydrology. Real-world examples will show how wetlands are being built to increase wildlife viewing opportunities, provide habitat for rare species, clean stormwater runoff, and reduce flooding.
