This is an educational video about native bees and creating your own native bee hotel. Native bees are almost always solitary which means they do not live in colonies like honey bees. Honey Bees are also vital pollinators to our country's agriculture, but they are not native to the United States. Most beekeepers have European honey bees. There are two species of honey bees and they are native in Europe or Asia. Because native bees are solitary and typically not social like honey bees, they usually are not noticed. Their populations are declining due to a myriad of environmental stressors. In order to help protect their populations, we can provide homes for them in our own backyard!! The native bees can find these nesting tubes in the hotel and pollinate our own home gardens or flowers. There will be one bee per nesting tube. During winter, they will either overwinter (similar to hibernation) or they will lay their egg with pollen. When spring returns, the bees will emerge from their "hotel room" and begin to pollinate again while staying in the same "room".
