The Orion Nebula (M42) is one of the most epic objects in the night sky. It comes around every winter here in the northeast. I shot about 7 hours of data including 4 hours of LRGB and 3 hours of Hydrogen Alpha (HA). After I finished, I had a hard time figuring out how to best process it. Adding Ha to the image directly made the Orion too red. I wanted to bring out the dust around the nebula and came to a solution that I was happy with–using the Ha as luminance but masking M42 with the HA itself.
