Welcome back to The Green Yard and an exciting growing video of a beautiful flowering, shade tree called a Royal Empress or (Paulownia). These trees are somewhat controversial in nature due to their invasive tendencies. They have been known (especially on the east coast) to spread by both seeds and root sprouts. They are native to China and are considered one of, if not the, fastest growing trees on earth. They can grow up to 20 feet per year until they reach their nature height of 30 to 60 feet. I have witnessed this first hand with our Royal Empress trees growing to over 20 feet in around 2 years. There are several varieties that are sterile and do not have the same invasive qualities as other varieties. I believe that these two trees must be of a sterile variety because they have flowered both years in the ground and have not produced any fruits or seeds. The trees also produces a beautiful flower, similar in appearance to a foxglove, which is why it's also called the foxglove tree. Since Royal Empress trees grow so quickly, they area a fantastic shade tree or a good tree to use to create a microclimate for fruit trees that require afternoon shade.
