With less than 40 percent of the Bluefin tuna quota left to catch and time running out on the Outer Banks fishing season, the northern and southern boats must scramble to catch as many fish as possible while there’s still time. For some members of the fleet, a failure to catch more tuna could have profoundly dire consequences for their personal lives.

In the past 15 days since the Bluefin tuna season started, captain Britton Shackelford, of local boat Doghouse, has caught only two tuna. With a family to feed and mounting bills, Britton has no choice but to take on a charter - something he has always avoided during commercial fishing seasons. On the one hand, he’ll get a guaranteed paycheck for taking out charter clients for the day. But, with the charter clients having paid for the right to be on the rod, if the boat hooks up a Bluefin, inexperienced fishermen could very easily make a mistake and lose a fish potentially worth as much as $20,000.

For a pair of longtime rivals, the failure to catch could mean a humiliating financial loss. Local boats Wahoo and Fishin’ Frenzy made a $5000 bet at the beginning of the season over which boat could haul in more tuna. Fishin’ Frenzy’s Captain Greg Mayer and First
mate Nick are in the lead - with six tuna to Wahoo’s five. With the end of the season possibly only days away, Nick is desperate to stay ahead of the brothers Reed and Banks Meredith in the fish count, as the $2500 that he’ll get if Frenzy win the bet will help him pay for his upcoming wedding.

For Captain Dave Marciano of northern vessel Hard Merchandise, the stakes are equally as personal. After a slow start to his Outer Banks season, Dave hasn’t caught as many Bluefin as he’d hoped and he needs to catch and to pay for his kids’ looming tuition payments. The stress has begun to take a toll on Dave’s health, and his first mate and nephew Jay Muenzner is worried.

Meanwhile, friends-turned-foes Tyler McLaughlin, captain of Pin Wheel, and TJ Ott, skipper of Hot Tuna, face the potential end of the season from very different perspectives. Both made a huge financial gamble, steaming 550 miles from Gloucester to Wanchese. TJ has caught only three fish so far and is struggling to make his southern season worth the trip. But Tyler, TJ’s onetime apprentice, has outshined his old master by catching seven tuna and challenging the best local boats in their own backyard. So when a resentful TJ gets the opportunity to confront Tyler, he seizes it.
For all fishermen in the Outer Banks fleet, a diminishing quota means it’s time to ratchet up their efforts. And if they don’t, the cost could be profound. Who will beat the odds? And who will fail in their quest?
