After dominating headlines in 1941 and vanishing beneath the Atlantic, the German battleship Bismarck lay lost for 48 years, resting nearly 4,800 meters (15,700 feet) down on the side of an underwater volcano.
In this video, we follow Bismarck’s short but devastating combat career, the sinking of HMS Hood, the desperate final battle against the Royal Navy, and the decades-long hunt that finally led Robert Ballard – the same oceanographer who found Titanic – to her wreck in 1989.
Using survivor accounts, deep-sea footage, and modern forensic analysis, we explore what really sank Bismarck, why her hull remains so intact on the seafloor, and how this lost WWII battleship became a protected war grave and a haunting time capsule of naval warfare in the North Atlantic.
