This recording is dedicated to my close friend Roy Berridge who HIGHLY encouraged me to learn it and coached me all the way through it. He is a musical inspiration.
This is a transcription of one of the last pieces that Strauss wrote. Its title means "Falling Asleep."
It begins with racing thoughts represented by strange chord progressions leaping from high to low all over the piano.
The text describes a woman who tells her hands to stop working and her mind to stop thinking.
At 2:00 the music descends in to a quiet reverie with one of the most gorgeous melodies ever written. She falls asleep.
Then beautiful ascending scales in the left hand signify the soul leaving the body, and the same melody repeats, this time full and forward, as she sings about living a thousand times more deeply in the magic circle of the night.
Then a peaceful fade-out lasts over a minute :)
I think it's so beautiful. And, written in 1948!!! So recently!
