Pre-recorded presentation for June 8, 2021 presentation at the 2021 Virtual Society of Wetland Scientists Annual Meeting. Efforts to restore Rumney Marsh have been constrained by a belief that an abandoned highway embankment protects property from tidal flooding. Changes to the Pines River estuary following the reconstruction of three downstream bridges, reveal that the abandoned highway embankment does not protect upstream areas from tidal flooding. Removal of the embankment would allow restoration of 444-acres of marsh and improve drainage for the upstream developed property, making this one of the largest potential salt marsh restoration projects in Massachusetts.
