extra info:
The astonishingly deep lore of the game meant the intended emotional evocations were incredibly specific. It also needed to be able to slow down to as much as half speed while still sounding good. It took more than 120 hours and 4 complete rewrites for me to be satisfied.
The game is about discovering and traversing an alien techology, the soundworld needed to be complicated but parsable, and an augmentation of real-world sounds so it felt organic. Almost all instruments heard in the music are therefore real, but fragmented and mangled into tiny little pieces.
The lyrics are English-ish - fragmented, some reversed, alien but familiar. They're sung by a long-dead singer I admire, meticulously restored and cleaned from its original 1945 radio broadcast. The lyrics are deliberate and have have an esoteric meaning, discussed at length with the creator and maverick, corru.
Time signatures used: 4/4, 5/8, 7/8, 3/4
Material created: ~50 minutes of music created in 3 project files, 4 sketches produced, distilled into a loopable 3 and a half minutes in-game.
