Yes indeed, You read it correct:
South Africans were performing BLACK FACE MINSTREL shows way before New Orleans Zulu parade ever existed.
The South Africans adapted the performances of White Minstrel shows that traveled the world. They enjoyed seeing white people mock Black American entertainers so much, they incorporated it into their one day off carnival celebration.
Due to Apartheid, the Kaapse Klope carnival aka Coon Carnival was banned for a very long time.
But emerged around 1960's of 1980's with a strong vibrant celebration of resistance, resilience and solidarity
with full on influence of New Orleans Mardi Gras, the Mardi Gras color scheme, the decorated umbrellas, outfits, swing dancing, dancing drum majors, battle of the bands, all the second line works of New Orleans.
Chile, yes they did!
THE HYPOCRISY OF IT ALL THOUGH, SMDH
