This is the entire broadcast coverage of ABCs Wide World of Sports 1984 Race Across America. These riders took very few breaks during the 10 days of riding straight through from Huntington Beach, CA to Atlantic City, NJ. This was also a time capsule of the early days when cycling was beginning to gain popularity in America again.
Prepare to be moved by this incredible broadcast of the 3rd RAAM. Jim Lampley and his ABC team, who previously won an Emmy for their 1982 coverage of the same race, deliver a commentary and music that, when combined with the sweeping epic imagery from an America in the 80s, is truly a sight to behold. It's hard not to be touched when watching these true ultramarathon cycling pioneers take on one of the most difficult feats in all of sports.
Enjoy seeing a young Lon Haldeman (Marathon Lon), Susan Notorangelo, Pete Pensyres, Michael Secrest, and many more as they battle mountainous terrain, hills, sleep deprivation, and saddle sores to ride over 3,000 miles to ride cross America in less than 2 weeks - on a bike!
More needs to be written about these men and women. True heroes.
