Longshore Drift (and Spits) Explained

Longshore drift moves sediment across the length of a beach. The swash comes in at an angle due to the wind, and the backwash retreats at a perpendicular angle to the shore. If the right conditions are met, a spit can form. If that spit connects to an island, it is called a tombolo.
