Half of Australia's refugees are under the age of 15. Many are placed in schools within 48 hours of their arrival to Australia without sufficient command of the English language. On Thursday 17 February, the Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation launched Subtext: Art for Literacy - a two week long text-based art exhibition at CarriageWorks in support if its refugee literacy program -- RAS.
Hundreds of guests turned up in support of the event, with speakers including Prashanth Shanmugan, United Nations Ambassador for the Global Atlas of Human Rights and Auday Al-Sheik, Lurnea High School student and collaborative artist who came to Australia as a refugee from Iraq.
Renowned MC and graffiti artist 'Mistery' also performed and included a few freestyle segments with students from Lurnea High School joining in.
