Burnham & Berrow is the last course from the Epic Golf Trip between England and Wales.
From the moment I drove through the gates, I was in awe. Burnham & Berrow is a links course shaped by some of golf’s greatest architects — Herbert Fowler, C.H. Alison, Alister MacKenzie, and Harry Colt. Their combined influence leaves a course that is both challenging and endlessly engaging.
The fairways weave across undulating terrain and massive sandhills. The course has a rugged, wild feel, with clever, demanding bunkering and water that comes into play on a few holes — unusual for a traditional links. Par 3s feature intricate green complexes, each presenting a unique challenge. The fairways are tight off the tee, and while there are a few blind shots, the course always feels fair, asking only for accuracy and thoughtful strategy.
Burnham & Berrow isn’t just a beautiful test of golf; it’s also a stage for serious competition. It regularly hosts amateur events and Open qualifying, a testament to the quality and difficulty of the layout. For any golfer seeking a top-tier experience in England, skipping Burnham & Berrow would be a mistake. It’s fun, challenging, and filled with character.
And then there’s a moment I’ll never forget. When I arrived at the first tee, the starter noticed my American accent. He said they hadn’t been expecting an American and offered to raise the flag for me. I declined, but when I finished 18 and saw the American flag fluttering in the wind, I tipped my hat to Burnham & Berrow — a small gesture, but one that made the experience unforgettable.
Burnham & Berrow is more than a round of golf. It’s a reminder that some of the best courses aren’t always the most famous. They’re the ones that surprise you, challenge you, and stay with you long after the final putt.
