Built in 1859, this piano displays all the design advancements that had made Chickering the, as to then, preeminent manufacturer in America. This video is about those early advancements. Much of what is shown here was soon to be abandoned, because 1859 was also the year that Steinway put out their first over-strung grand. This might be thought of as the last pre-Steinway Chickering, and it shows. The damper system is the most curious, so I saved it for the end.
