Matthew Lillard has responded emotionally to Quentin Tarantino’s recent criticism of his acting, admitting that the director’s comments stung far more than he initially let on. Speaking at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, the Scream star addressed Tarantino’s remarks from *The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast*, where the filmmaker bluntly stated, “I don’t care for Matthew Lillard.”
Lillard first brushed off the comment in front of fans, joking, “Eh, whatever. Who gives a s---,” as the audience booed Tarantino’s name. But once the noise settled, he opened up honestly about how the critique affected him. “It hurts your feelings. It f---in' sucks,” Lillard admitted. He also noted the double standard that top-tier actors rarely face such public takedowns. “You wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise. You wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor in Hollywood.”
The actor shared that, while he’s beloved on the convention circuit, he doesn’t get the same recognition within the industry. “I’m very popular in this room. I’m not very popular in Hollywood,” he said, describing the experience as both humbling and painful. Fans quickly reassured him, shouting, “We love you!”—a sentiment Lillard thanked them for warmly.
Tarantino has faced backlash for his harsher-than-usual opinions on several actors. In the same podcast episode, he called Paul Dano “the weakest male actor in SAG,” despite ranking There Will Be Blood as his No. 5 film of the 21st century. He also remarked that he “really can't stand Owen Wilson,” even while praising Midnight in Paris as his No. 10 pick. Although Tarantino offered no examples of Lillard’s work, he lumped him into the same group, saying he simply doesn’t care for him.
The filmmaker’s comments sparked widespread support for Dano from industry peers including Matt Reeves, Ben Stiller, Simu Liu, and Alec Baldwin.
Lillard currently appears in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and recently starred in Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck alongside Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Karen Gillan.
