The hike was around 3.5km each way, and approximately 300m elevation gain overall - made a tad more difficult in the rare heat and having the girls on our backs! We set off fairly early at around 9am and it was chilly at the beginning with clouds rolling in, but after around 50 meters of climbing we de-robed and were in t-shirts and shorts! Not what we expected in Iceland.
TOP TIPS... Flies were a real issue for us (May 2025) and having a buff was a godsend, for the few minutes I wore it before I gave it to our 3 year old. It made the walking quite unpleasant actually but nearer the top, a nice wind helped the situation and in the river (40C!) we had no issues. What a spectacular place, and lovely atmosphere at the river, with plenty of space for everyone.
Parking is paid after trip, and there are toilets but only open after 10am at the base, from memory. You can drink the fresh waterfall/stream glacier water- incredible!
