Kevin Potter is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Vienna, and the author of Poetics of the Migrant: Migrant Literature and the Politics of Motion.
This lecture will examine two texts by Ghassān Kanafānī, Returning to Haifa and Men in the Sun, through the lens of world-systems analysis. This perspective considers how these two novellas represent the experiences of occupation and expulsion, demonstrating how they connect with the broader structure of coloniality, dispossession, and exploitation. This talk will place these texts within their specific generic and literary traditions, demonstrating how they index the global life of capital at the level of style and form. This lecture will also articulate Kanafānī's fiction to the century-long Palestinian tragedy, elucidating the contradictions inherent to settler-colonialism and Zionism, thereby anticipating the present-day, intensified genocide in Gaza.
