Ever hear the similarity between surf music and old western soundtracks. Coincidence? Probably not. Imagine it. The open west, the empty horizon. The cowboy riding off into the sunset. The new world. Travel west and test yourself. In America you follow that long rugged trail west and where does it take you, to the sea. The ultimate west, the last long open horizon.
Who has continued travelling west? The land stopped but that didn't stop them. Sailors, fisherman, surfers, and divers. Taking on that last fronier.
Maybe this is why every surfer thinks of himself a cowboy. And hell, I’m sure a lot of cowboys would have been surfers.
Now pictures Southern California. Covered in freeways and shopping malls. Line ups packed, overfished. Where can the thrill seekers and risktakers go now?
Baja. That’s right. Baja.
A thin, 700 mile strip of coastline extending off of Mexico. The landscape is rugged, and it's resilient, and it beckons those bearing the same characteristics. The thrill seekers, the risk takers, the hard workers, and the searchers. You see, for them, this land is an empty canvas. A place only limited by their own imagination, and guts. For generations these thrill seekers have rambled down the coast, by land, and by sea in a wild search for thrills, for solitude, and for the challenge. And over the years, the land and the sea haven't changed much, and in a way, neither have the thrill seekers you challenge them.
