There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world: The Adirondack Park. It's home to stunning vistas, clean water, and about 2.5 million acres of land as wild as it was in 1892, the year it was designated the first Forever Wild Forest reserve in the nation. It’s the largest state park, and the largest National Historic landmark in the United States. But the park is struggling. Portions of the park can be compared to an ailing patient. Population loss, a housing shortage, climate change and one-size-fits-all policymaking out of Albany have all led to a loss of social capital: the ephemeral fabric that binds communities together to achieve a common goal. The Adirondacks may be protected by New York’s state constitution, but its human population is fraying.
